Southern Beaches
The south coast of Mauritius is still relatively undeveloped, with some good new options for accommodation now extending across acres of the old Bel Ombre sugar plantation estates.
This southern region of the island tends to be cooler and more temperate than the north and also benefits from a dramatic coral reef, creating a protected lagoon for swimming and watersports with fantastic views of crashing surf on the horizon.
The sand here is a shade more yellow than the white coral sands on the east coast, but the beaches are fine and there is a good selection of accommodation. Benefits of the south coast include the cooler climate, close proximity to the airport and a secluded, timeless atmosphere.

A great mid-range hotel on the south coast of the island. designed around an African village with a thatched theme this is a good hotel. However the beach is poor and it is sandwiched between quite a few new hotels on the South Coast. It has a great spa which used to be free and this was a big draw card. The rooms are huge and well designed
Mauritius, South coast
A very very stylish hotel in a lovely old colonial style. The pool is huge and the rooms and common parts are great. A step up from the next door Heritage, though too French for our liking.
