Duke’s Camp in the Okavango Delta is quite the statement. With its draped canvas, antique silverware and vintage-safari style, staying here will transport you back a fair few decades. It’s all about old school luxury: think three course meals, crystal glasses, and regal furniture, with a slightly modern twist. Decor aside, this camp is an intimate option in a great game-viewing area.

Duke's Camp - The Facts

Grandeur and flamboyance under canvas is the name of the game at Duke’s Camp, opened in 2022 by the same brains behind the world famous Kalahari favourite Jack’s Camp.

Sitting in an 89,000 hectare concession in the northern Delta, just north of the famed Vumbura and Duba Plains, Duke’s lies on the beautiful Kgao Island. It provides a rare opportunity to totally detach from the outside world, as Duke’s doesn’t have WiFi. It also offers a brilliant fly-camping experience for longer stays, where you can sleep under the stars on a lantern-lit island.

Back at the main camp, eight rooms are raised on wooden decks, set under a canopy of ebony and leadwood trees. Each room has a dramatic four poster bed and a deck with leather chairs, looking out onto the watery grassland beyond. Often elephants and red lechwe can be spotted without leaving your bed.

Your three course dinner is either eaten under the night’s sky and or is a communal affair in the safari-formal dining room, and between eats, activities on offer include all the Okavango Delta staples: game drives, night drives, and fishing. If you’re having a relaxing afternoon, there’s also a spa menu on offer, or guests can take a dip in the main area pool (a welcome bit of new world luxury!).

With prices starting from $1,360 and going up to $2,080 in high season, Duke’s isn’t much more than its luxurious Delta neighbours, which often linger in the higher end of this scale. That being said, it’s also by no means the best value option if you’re not fussed about 1940s style luxury living.
