Our View

Maxa is an exciting new opening in the north eastern reaches of the Okavango Delta offering simple, brilliant safaris in a wild setting, with the area’s famously varied activities and incredible wildlife. While Botswana tends to lean towards super luxury safari, Maxa is a refreshingly down to earth option, offering barefoot luxury for much less than many other camps in the region. It’s bringing Delta safaris back to basics, and we’re loving it.

Maxa - The Facts

Opened in March 2025, Maxa is filling a much-needed gap in the market: a no fuss, relaxed camp that’s under canvas and safari-mad. Overlooking the large hippo hub of Maxa Lagoon, this simple camp sits on a neat wooden platform with open sides and candle-lit picnic bench dining.

The main area, with clay walls and a canvas roof, isn’t confined to a small space: the lodge also spills out to an incredible elevated deck fit with its own daybed and hammock, which sways lazily in front of the busy lagoon. It’s an ideal spot for afternoon relaxation, and an area many camps will no doubt be emulating in coming years. Nowhere else in the Delta - or Africa, for that matter - also has its own wood-fired oven in a disused termite mound...

Rooms are simple, compact and comfortable, with four stretch canvas tents on decks, all with their own indoor and outdoor bathrooms (which is a welcome safari luxury some swimming pool-clad camps can’t boast). One is a family tent, with two bedrooms and shared bathrooms. Only 12 guests are in camp at any one time, meaning you will get a truly tailored safari experience making it feel all the more homely.

Water-based and land activities are brilliant around Maxa, with its network of lesser explored seasonal floodplains on its doorstep. Guests can enjoy mokoro rides, walking safaris, and day and night drives in this private concession.

All in all, Maza is what safari is all about: going back to the old school mentality of simple appreciation for the wilderness and keen exploration, without any of the added fuss Botswana can sometimes champion.
