Birdwatching

The wild expanses of East and Southern Africa are paradise for birders. While there is plenty to occupy the keen or amateur birdwatching fanatic from the moment you touch down, there are also plenty of opportunities to spend time with some seriously impressive guides.
Some guides have developed bird knowledge as a special interest, some have become so familiar with the common bird guide books that they literally name the page with each bird sighting... It certainly saves time leafing through indexes! It is wonderful and worthwhile to have someone to share your enthusiasm with. The many habitats of East Africa provide dream birdwatching locations, and a dauntingly long list of endemic species that you simply have to travel to find.

A good general resource for all matters birding is http://www.fatbirder.com/

Birds found only in East Africa:

Tanzania is birdwatching heaven, with serious diversity. There are well over a thousand species and 29 endemics; nearly as many as neighbouring Kenya, with loads of fantastic locations, lodges and guides.  The birdlife of Kenya lures birders from across the globe, to either witness its many endemic species in localised habitats or to enjoy the sheer spectacular range and breath of species that may be seen in a day.  Drift the Delta, rich with varied and colourful birdlife, and then explore the Kalahari desert. The Makgadikgadi salt pans, famous for their large flamingo breeding colonies, also harbour many other special birds.

Due to an incredibly diverse mosaic of habitats, birding in East Africa is world class and generally quite different from in Southern Africa. If you really cannot manage two trips, Tanzania, in the middle, manages a spectrum of east African species in the north, and some of the southern species in the south.
These are just some of our favourite birdwatching locations, but  we can certainly arrange special interest trips in other locations that are not specifically mentioned here.
